Dress For Success

Updated: Feb 3, 2019

This week we'd like to share with you a fantastic charity called 'Dress For Success'. Their mission is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a support network, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

The women Dress for Success support include those who have been made redundant, have faced gender, age or racial discrimination in their job search, are dealing with a motherhood penalty after breaking their careers to care for children, and are recovering from a health-care crisis, the breakdown of a marriage, domestic violence, or inter-generational poverty.

If you would like to help out there are three things you can do:

You can donate professional clothing, accessories including bags and any unopened toiletries and make-up. These items will be used by women for formal events and job interviews so the three questions you need to ask before donating are:

  • Would I wear it to work?

  • Would I feel good if I wore it?

  • Is it still fashionable?

If you don't have any items to donate, you can also give a monetary donation online.

You can even hold a donation drive at your workplace or withing your friendship circle.

Dress for Success rely on volunteering, and if this is something you'd like to try you could be involved in any of the following activities:

  • Styling clients at the Marrickville Boutique, correctional centres and greater-Sydney locations

  • Assisting with our Career Support Program, including workshops and coaching

  • Packing parcels of clothing for women in regional NSW locations

  • Receiving and sorting donated clothes at our Marrickville Logistics Centre

  • Working on various board sub-committees

  • Helping with fundraising events and other projects.

Empower Hour is an initiative Dress for Success are promoting for International Women's Day on the 8th of March. There are many ways you and your workplace can get involved:

  • Encourage your colleagues to donate an hour of their pay.

  • If you're hosting an IWD event you can request a Dress for Success speaker

  • Promote the Empower Hour through social media

  • Host an event for IWD raising funds for Dress for Success.

With your support, Dress for Success can continue providing services that inspire women to take charge of their lives. For more information on the services Dress for Success provide, and how to donate head to their website here.
